Money, Phones & Internet

Practical details for daily life in Bhutan — what to carry, how to pay and how to stay connected.

Need help?

Our team can answer any question about your trip.

Currency

The Bhutanese currency is the ngultrum (Nu.), pegged one-to-one with the Indian rupee. Indian rupee notes are widely accepted, although some higher-denomination notes may not be — ask us for the current position before you travel.

Cards and cash

  • ATMs are found in Thimphu, Paro, Phuentsholing and most district towns; not all accept foreign cards.
  • Larger hotels and handicraft shops in Thimphu and Paro often take cards; small shops and villages do not.
  • Carry some cash for snacks, tips, temple offerings and small purchases.
  • Money can be exchanged at banks and at Paro airport.

Phones and SIM cards

Bhutan has two mobile networks, B-Mobile (Bhutan Telecom) and TashiCell. Tourist SIM cards with data are easy to buy in Paro and Thimphu with your passport or permit; your guide can help. Coverage is good in towns and along main roads, and patchy on high passes and treks.

Internet

Most hotels in towns offer Wi-Fi for guests. Speeds vary by location, and remote valleys may be slow — a good excuse to look up from the screen.

Electricity

The supply is 230 V, 50 Hz. Sockets usually take Indian-style round-pin plugs (types D and M), and often type C. A universal adaptor is the easiest solution.
