Destinations in Bhutan

Bhutan is more than a destination — it’s an experience. From the capital to the spiritual heartland, these are the valleys we know best, and the journeys that visit them.

Altitude about 2,300 m

Thimphu

Bhutanese culture, city life, local markets, museums and iconic landmarks.

The capital is the easiest place to feel how modern Bhutan works: monks and office workers share the same pavements, the weekend market fills with chillies and fern shoots, and there is still no traffic light — a policeman directs the junction by hand. Our own Thimphu Residency is here, so most journeys start or end with us.

Punakha

The magnificent Punakha Dzong, riverside scenery, suspension bridges and peaceful valleys.

Lower and warmer than Thimphu, Punakha is a valley of rice terraces where two rivers — the Pho Chhu and the Mo Chhu — meet beneath the most graceful dzong in the country. Spring brings jacaranda blossom along its walls. Punakha Residency in Khuruthang puts you a short drive from all of it.

Paro

Traditional architecture, historic sites and the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

Most journeys begin in Paro, where the country’s principal international airport sits in a narrow valley of farmhouses and willow trees. Above it, Taktsang — the Tiger’s Nest — clings to the cliff. Legend says Guru Rinpoche flew here on the back of a tigress to meditate in the cave the monastery now surrounds.

Phobjikha Valley

Open landscapes, nature experiences and the peaceful atmosphere of a Himalayan valley.

A wide glacial valley on the far side of the Black Mountains, Phobjikha is protected for the black-necked cranes that winter here, usually from late October to February. There is a broad, quiet feel to the place: potato fields, pine forest, a single great monastery and walking trails across the valley floor.

Altitude about 2,600–3,100 m

Bumthang

Sacred sites, cultural heritage and traditional Bhutanese communities.

Four valleys make up Bumthang, the spiritual heartland of the country, where some of Bhutan’s oldest temples stand among buckwheat fields and apple orchards. It is a long drive from the west, which is exactly why it feels unhurried. Many festivals here are village affairs, and local cheese, honey and buckwheat noodles are the treats.

Haa Valley

A quiet western valley over the Chele La pass, opened to visitors in 2002.

Haa sits over Chele La, one of the highest road passes in the west, and sees far fewer visitors than its neighbours. Its landmarks are the twin temples — Lhakhang Karpo and Lhakhang Nagpo, the white and the black — and its farmhouses, where buckwheat dumplings called hoentoe are a local speciality.
